On Thursday 30th July, over 250 people attended our 8th annual Fun Day, which was held at West Faversham Community Centre. The event brought together sports providers from across Kent to encourage adults and children with a learning disability to try out new things in a welcoming environment.
We were very privileged to have the support of some of the top sports organisations in Kent, whose professionals provided their expertise free of charge. This year, we had coaches from Gillingham Football Club, Kent Community Cricket and Bowls Development Alliance, and also offered tasters in boccia, table tennis and basketball.
We are very grateful to the team at Kent Sport, who not only helped to fund the event but also provided enthusiastic staff for several of the sports. Volunteers from Lloyds Bank and Sainsburys in Faversham provided support on the day, greeting people and manning sports activities.
The event included a raffle, which raised £180 for the charity, thanks to donations from local businesses including Tesco Faversham, KM Community Treasure Chest, Moosie Cakes, Hornby Hobbies and Sainsburys. The winning tickets were drawn by the Mayor of Swale, Cllr Anita Walker, who kindly attended the day along with the Mayor of Faversham, Cllr Nigel Kay.
“People with a learning disability often feel excluded from sports and leisure, but this event showed that there are many organisations in Kent who are keen to welcome them,” commented Fundraising Manager, Jane Brooke. “The weather was ideal and it was great to see people of all ages and abilities taking part.”
