Want to get fit this year? Then join Fit Start, a healthy living club based at our Ramsgate resource centre. The club, which is led by Kimberley Besant from Motiv8 Sports, provides the opportunity for adults with a learning disability to discuss healthy eating, try new foods and get the body moving with sport and exercise.
Last year, Fit Start hired a sports court at Ramsgate leisure centre to play a game of pickleball. The group really enjoyed this session, and in December organised their own fundraising challenge to raise funds to visit more community venues. The club’s 12 Dares of Christmas swapped swans-a-swimming for sumo-squats, and raised over £100. Due to the success of this fundraiser, the group plan to organise a quarterly challenge to fund regular pickleball sessions.
Fit Start is funded by Kent Community Foundation, Comic Relief and Kent County Council. With their support, we have been able to extend to the project until August this year.
“As part of Motiv8 Sports, I’ve had the pleasure of leading the Fit Start sessions and encouraging people with a learning disability to become healthier,” commented Kimberley.
“In recent sessions, we’ve been eating the colours of the rainbow, which the group responded really positively to. The extension of the project will allow us to organise more fun and educational sessions like this.”
Fit Start takes place every Wednesday, from 4pm to 6pm, at Foresters Hall. For more information, contact us via email, or phone 01843-224482.
