To mark Learning Disability Week (19-25 June 2017) this year our Margate Resource Centre hosted a week full of fun activities for everyone to get involved in. LD Week is a national celebration of what people with a learning disability can achieve.
Kick starting the week with a community picnic in the park, the Valuing People Now Project invited our members to spend their afternoon enjoying the sunshine and having lunch in a local park with friends on Tuesday 20th June. The picnic proved popular amongst members with Kevin Hudson commenting: “I liked being outside and how busy the park was.”
On Thursday 22nd June, some of our members spent the day in London at Mencap’s Big Day Out. The group took part in employment workshops and thoroughly enjoyed meeting other Mencap groups and Royal Mencap staff. The day was a great hit amongst our members who are now eager to return to the event next year! Member, Natasha Rudkin said: “We spent the day doing fun workshops. I enjoyed all of it and would definitely go again!”
The weather didn’t manage to dampen the mood at the fun afternoon on Thursday at the Margate Resource Centre. There was a wide range of activities for everyone to get involved in, from penalty shoot-out to bean bag games. The BBQ went ahead as planned and a great day was had by all. Lee Harrison who attended the event said: “I liked being in goal for the penalty shoot-out all afternoon, even in the great British weather!” The event concluded with a raffle, with lots of lucky winners taking home prizes. The afternoon raised £103.37 in total which will go towards our resource services.
