In September, Kent County Council announced the winners of its Learning Disability Partnership Awards, which celebrates those who make a difference to the lives of people with a learning disability.
Among the winners was Swale member, Jade, who was honoured with the People’s Award. This award celebrates someone with a learning disability who has made a difference to other people’s lives and was given to Jade for her voluntary work.
Jade volunteers at the Swale District Partnership Group, which provides the opportunity for people with a learning disability to talk about the things that are important to them. With DPG support, Jade obtained her Level 2 Food Safety Hygiene qualification and now helps Support Worker, Caz White, organise DPG events. In addition to this, Jade also volunteers at the Seashells Children & Families Centre in Sheerness, where she sets up the room for the pre-school children, prepares drinks and snacks and talks to parents.
“Jade has a very caring nature and often thinks of others before herself,” commented Caz. “She doesn’t like a lot of attention and because of this many people don’t realise how much she’s actually achieved. This award has given Jade the recognition she deserves.”
The Kent Learning Disability Partnership Board (KLDPB) have groups across Kent where people with a learning disability, their families and carers can talk about the things that are important to them. For more information about the KLDPB, click here.
