A group of more than 50 adults with learning disabilities recently took part in a six-week fitness course run by East Kent Mencap. The course was delivered by Motiv8 Sports, which developed a programme of exercises that everyone could take part in, whatever their ability or level of fitness.
The course was based on a smaller project, which offered fitness sessions to a group of less than 10 people at our resource centre in Cliftonville. This received such a positive response that we decided to offer something similar at our Gateway Club, to which more than 50 people with a learning disability attend, including those that live independently.
Due to the continued success of these sessions, we have secured funding from Kent Community Foundation, Comic Relief and Kent County Council to run a 40-week course at our Ramsgate resource centre, beginning Wednesday 27th April.
Ian, who attended the sessions at our weekly club, said: “I’ve really enjoyed the fitness sessions, they’ve challenged me, helping to develop new skills.”
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone and watching them improve. It has been the best hour of my week and I can’t wait to start delivering sessions in Ramsgate,” commented Kimberley Besant from Motiv8 Sports.
Fit Start takes place every Wednesday, from 4pm to 6pm, at Foresters Hall. For more information, contact us via email, or phone 01843-224482.
