November 9-15th was LD Work Experience Week, which aims to show employers the benefits of employing a person with a learning disability.
Nigel Viscount, has been interested in working for some time. With the support of our Canterbury Community Team, Nigel visited the library and typed a letter offering his voluntary services for 2 hours a week.
Support Worker John: ‘We took them to local supermarkets. Nigel handed them personally to the duty managers. He got one reply from Sainsbury’s in Whitstable offering him work experience.’
Nigel: ‘I was extremely happy and am now looking for paid work. I did the induction with staff member Rose and successfully remembered the safety measures and fire exits, how to lift things safely and work without hampering shoppers.’
John: ‘We spent some time getting used to the store, knowing where things were and what was expected during work experience.’
Nigel; ‘My first task was to go through the aisles clearing away the empty cardboard boxes and taking them to the cardboard crusher.’
John: ‘Nigel’s confidence grew on the second session he was shown how to put out food, which he handled well.
After meeting the Manger for the Faversham branch at the EKM Funday in July, Nigel wrote to her to ask for more work experience!’
Update: Nigel got a reply and started in October – good luck for the future Nigel!
