Here, Russell talks about what he does in his role of Support Worker within our resource team, and why he enjoys it.
I started volunteering for East Kent Mencap in 2004. When a role came up within the resource team, I applied and became a paid member of staff.
During my time here, I have introduced various activities for members to take part in. First it was woodwork, where we made items such as clocks. Then we went on bird watching trips, and soon after began taking photographs of wildlife and exhibiting these in local galleries.
I enjoy working for East Kent Mencap because I can see first hand how members are given the same opportunities as everyone else. Both staff and members are also encouraged to introduce new ideas, and are supported by the rest of the organisation to find the resources needed to make these things happen.
