To celebrate Learning Disability Week 2016 (20-26 June), we organised a Fun Day at our Ramsgate resource centre. The Mayor of Ramsgate, Cllr Trevor Shonk, joined in the celebrations by taking part in a penalty shootout before enjoying the BBQ.
Other activities during the week included a picnic in Margate, an awareness walk in Deal and a clothes swap in Herne Bay.
This year, the theme for Learning Disability Week was friendships and relationships. People with a learning disability can find it difficult to make friends, and often face isolation and exclusion from everyday activities.
Our Ramsgate resource centre provides the opportunity for people with a learning disability to take part in community activities such as gardening, woodwork and photography. Cllr Trevor Shonk is a great supporter of our work and recently funded Fit Start, a healthy living club based at the centre.
Resource Manager, Wendy Cameron, said: “There was a real community feel at the Fun Day, with the penalty shootout creating a friendly rivalry between people.”
