GOLD are looking for a volunteer to support the running of their Women’s Group. Getting On with Learning Difficulties (GOLD) is funded by the Big Lottery Fund and provides free information and advice to people with learning difficulties. The project supports people with benefits, housing, debt and budgeting, volunteering, leisure activities, meeting people and campaigning.
The Women’s Group at East Kent Mencap are a group of women with a learning or physical disability. They meet on the first Tuesday of each month at various locations across Thanet between 4-6pm to discuss a variety of issues and how they affect them. Often feeling ignored by society, the Women’s Group provides a chance to talk about things that are important to them with people that listen and who care. They discuss what goes on in the community and how to get involved. Touching on topics like how to protect Women from abuse, the group has recently worked with Oasis the domestic abuse charity to make an Easy Read leaflet.
The group are looking for more ideas of things they can learn, talk about and get involved in. They are looking for someone who is friendly, outgoing, a good listener, understands women’s issues and disability rights or is willing to learn. The position is on a voluntary basis but reasonable out of pocket expenses will be paid. It is also subject to an enhanced DBS (Police) check which is currently free to volunteers.
For more information, contact us via email, or phone 01843 224482. Potential volunteers will initially be invited to meet the group for an informal discussion.
