Children and youth services

We offer Saturday Clubs and support in the community for young people. The clubs offer an opportunity to make friends and get involved in community projects and local activities. Our Community Support team can support young people in the family home or access activities in the community, providing respite to family and carers.

Supporting Independence Service

We offer a bespoke service, designed to meet the needs of each child from 0 – 25 with complex needs.

Our Supporting Independence Service (SIS) in East Kent provides one-to-one and two-to-one support for young people in their homes or to access the community.

Our services are for young people with funded support, and referrals must be discussed with their Social Worker or Transitional Worker.

For more information on our services call 01843 808 964 or email info@eastkentmencap.co.uk

Read this letter below from the parent of a child who uses our Supporting Independence Service:

“I wanted to put pen to paper to personally thank you all for your ongoing support and help with [my daughter].

When I think back to the very beginning I really did not see it working, as she hated people in her house, it just was very hard for her to accept. But as time went on I saw vast improvements with [my daughter] and her acceptance grew more and more.

Every single member of staff past and present has been truly amazing, the level of care and support is fantastic. There has been some really tough times recently but [East Kent Mencap] have been by our side the whole way. Each member of staff brings different skills with them, but all with [my daughter's] best interest at the centre. You all go that little bit extra, and give [my daughter] so much and myself too.

Without [East Kent Mencap] I dread to think what would of happened. You have taken [my daughter] as an individual and treated her with respect in everything you do. You have not backed away when the going was rough, instead you have helped and supported us through it all.

With your help [my daughter] has made so much improvement, and that is because you make her feel happy and safe. She is gaining confidence and beginning to enjoy her life once again. The bonds she had built with you all makes me so happy, and I never worry when she is in your care.

[My daughter] and I are so very lucky to have each of you in our lives, and I don't think you all are told enough just how much you are appreciated for your hard work.

I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, and know we never take you for granted. you are all truly amazing and the work you do makes such big differences to the young people you support and their families. I feel like we are all part of one big extended family that are all on the same page."

Youth Bowling Club

Our Bowling Club takes place every Wednesday, from 4.30 - 6.30pm, at Bugsy’s Bowling in Margate. Entry is £5.70.

Please note, Bugsy’s charge a higher entry fee to those who arrive after 6pm. Parents and carers must stay on site.

The club provides the opportunity for young people with a learning disability to take part in a team-based activity in a way that's comfortable for them.

Each club night is facilitated by a number of support workers and volunteers, all of which are DBS regulated. However, we ask that parents and carers stay on the premises for the duration of the club.

This club does not run during half terms.

Saturday Club for young people with autism

We now run a FREE Saturday Club for young people with autism at Herne Bay. The club is for young people, from 11 to 18 years old, to make friends, share experiences, go on trips and take part in community activities.

We have just received additional Kent County Council Reconnect funding to pay for trips and have some exciting plans.

The club runs on alternative Saturdays from 10am to 1pm. Get in touch with Kelly or Louise on 07490773593 to find out more.
