At our annual general meeting in 2016, a relative of one of our tenants raised a concern that our supported living accommodation offered no provision for older people who require more accessible facilities. In response to this, we invested in the purchase of a property in Palm Bay.

FREE well being activities in Herne Bay

People with a learning disability living in Herne Bay and the surrounding area will soon be able to enjoy exciting new activities, all for FREE, thanks to funding from Canterbury City Council. The well being sessions will take place in June and July and include: Upcycling, Feeling Fit, Cooking, Drama, Reminiscence and Photography.

Yarn bomb sends a colourful message

Members and staff alike were in a spin to find their head office in Margate had been transformed into a woollen wonderland on Thursday 8th March. Our Women’s Group carried out the ‘yarn bomb’ by decorating the building with colourful wool creations to raise awareness of International Women’s Day.

GOLD hosts Open Day

On Wednesday 17th January, the GOLD Project welcomed over 80 guests to the opening of their new office. Getting On with Learning Disabilities (GOLD) is a lottery funded project which supports people with a learning disability living in Thanet to achieve their goals, so they can live the life they want.

Morrisons Foundation fund healthy living activities

The Morrisons Foundation has kindly donated £5,000 to East Kent Mencap. The donation will be used to run a health and wellbeing project focused on healthy eating and physical activity, helping people with a learning disability to become more independent and lead healthier lifestyles.

Carolling at Christmas

To spread some Christmas cheer, members of Thanet Big Sing Choir and East Kent Mencap recently performed a carol service for shoppers at Westwood Cross. Together, the group performed classics such as ‘Jingle Bells’, ‘Deck the Halls’ and ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’.

Christmas has come early at Arkley Road

This week, our tenants at Arkley Road celebrated Christmas, a little earlier than the rest of us. Support Workers, Kelly Forrest and Kerry Williams came up with the idea to have a ‘Christmas Day’ earlier in the month as tenants were heading back to their families for the holidays.

Crowd go bonkers for Variety Show

This month, our Swale drama group re-imagined ‘Alice in Wonderland’ for their annual performance. Titled ‘Bonkers’, the show blurred the lines between fantasy and reality as the audience were transported on a journey through Wonderland.

Drama group dazzle crowd with Christmas performance

On Thursday 30th November, our Thanet drama group took centre stage for their annual Christmas Variety Show. The all singing, all dancing extravaganza was put together by the group during their weekly drama sessions at Margate resource centre. The drama group, who all have a learning disability, have been preparing for the show all year long.
East Kent Mencap kick start partnership with Margate FC

On Saturday 25th November, Margate Football Club invited a group of people from East Kent Mencap to spend the afternoon as VIP guests at the match against Egham Town. Over 350 people watched as we unveiled our pitch side banner.
