Secret Shopper Group present findings to Westwood Cross

Our Secret Shopper group have spent the last 7 months investigating shops across Thanet. The Secret Shopper group from Margate Resource Centre, meet regularly to review the service provided by local shops in the area. Excitement was high in July, as the group went to deliver their findings to the Westwood Cross Management Team

In August, tenants from William House went on a week long holiday to Butlin’s in Bognor Regis. The trip proved popular amongst the group, with everyone appearing to enjoy themselves.

Karen Loughrill has joined us to lead our Day Opportunities for adults and children with a learning disability and work closely alongside fellow Operations Manager, Tim Birchley, who is responsible for regulated care, domiciliary, community and supported living.

Canterbury team host grand party

In September, our Canterbury service staged a spectacular soiree for over 100 people at the Marine Hotel. Guests included people with a learning disability who had previously used our services in the Canterbury District but also parents and carers who have supported us over the years.

Women’s Group launch Easy Read leaflet on domestic abuse

The Women’s Group invited women across Thanet to a tea party to launch an Easy Read leaflet on domestic abuse. The Group, who all have learning difficulties, have been working in collaboration with Oasis, the domestic abuse charity to produce the leaflet using simple language and images.

One Stop donate £3,000 to holiday club

Carriers for Causes grants support projects that ‘benefit local communities - helping to improve lives and local places’. They are available for good causes within two miles of a One Stop shop. Many members of East Kent Mencap will be familiar with the friendly staff at the One Stop Shop in Northdown Road, so we were hopeful when we sent off a request to fund trips for the young people accessing our holiday clubs.

On Thursday 3rd August, hundreds of people flocked to our one day festival for fun, football and falafel in the sunshine. The free event at Margate Football Club made sure everyone felt included regardless of age or ability during this Summer extravaganza.
