Making a difference
Start writing those Christmas lists because shopping season is here! This week marks the infamous Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales which kick starts the countdown to Christmas. Did you know that you could raise money for us just by shopping online?
In August, tenants from William House went on a week long holiday to Butlin’s in Bognor Regis. The trip proved popular amongst the group, with everyone appearing to enjoy themselves.
In October, we held our 57th Annual General Meeting which showcased our current successes and future plans. This time last year, members highlighted certain gaps in our services and we sought to change that. As a result, this year’s meeting was titled, ‘Responding to Members’.
We are proud to welcome a second Operations Manager to our team. Karen Loughrill has joined us to lead our Day Opportunities for adults and children with a learning disability and work closely alongside fellow Operations Manager, Tim Birchley, who is responsible for regulated care, domiciliary, community and supported living.
In September, our Canterbury service staged a spectacular soiree for over 100 people at the Marine Hotel. Guests included people with a learning disability who had previously used our services in the Canterbury District but also parents and carers who have supported us over the years.

The Women’s Group invited women across Thanet to a tea party to launch an Easy Read leaflet on domestic abuse. The Group, who all have learning difficulties, have been working in collaboration with Oasis, the domestic abuse charity to produce the leaflet using simple language and images.
Carriers for Causes grants support projects that ‘benefit local communities - helping to improve lives and local places’. They are available for good causes within two miles of a One Stop shop. Many members of East Kent Mencap will be familiar with the friendly staff at the One Stop Shop in Northdown Road, so we were hopeful when we sent off a request to fund trips for the young people accessing our holiday clubs.
On Sunday 14th May, The St Crispin Inn, Worth hosted charity helicopter rides to raise money for Cancer Research UK. William House tenants, Philip Lovelock, Joy Crick and Ingrid Jelhe took off into the air for a breathtaking view of East Kent
On Thursday 3rd August, hundreds of people flocked to our one day festival for fun, football and falafel in the sunshine. The free event at Margate Football Club made sure everyone felt included regardless of age or ability during this Summer extravaganza.
