Pat talks about supported living, her love for photography, going on holiday, and how to get away with not doing any ironing!
Pat lives in Clarence House. East Kent Mencap purchased this property in 2018 in response to the need for supported living accommodation for older people.
What do you enjoy most about living at East Kent Mencap’s Clarence House?
I lived in several East Kent Mencap houses before moving to Clarence House. I like living here; I can do things on my own, and a Support Worker comes in and supports me when I need it. I also like to tease her! I enjoy teasing people.
I live with four other people. We all met at the East Kent Mencap Day Service (Hub) and have been together for a while now. I have my own bedroom and can go there when I want some quiet time. I hate washing and ironing most. I will let you in on a secret, I don’t ever iron; I fold it up and put it under my pillow. It squashes it, so it is ready to wear!
I enjoy going down to the seafront in my wheelchair. I have two sisters, they come to see me every week; they don’t live far away which is nice.
We understand that your passion for photography developed at East Kent Mencap, can you tell us about it?
I went to Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory with the East Kent Mencap photography group to photograph the wildlife and really enjoyed it. It was very relaxing; we saw birds, like Swallows and all sorts, and they were very impressive. There have been many exhibitions of our photographs for people to come and see. I also enjoy watching the birds in our garden at Clarence House.

Could you share some of your favourite holiday memories?
I have been on holiday to all sorts of places. I am going on holiday to Norfolk soon. I have been there before; it was very good. Norfolk is beautiful, lots of lovely beaches and I like to see the wildlife and animals. I take my wheelchair so I can get out and about, and experience new things. I went on a boat last time; I was scared stiff at first, but during the ride I got more confident and enjoyed it.

What do you enjoy doing most at the East Kent Mencap Margate Hub?
My favourite thing to do at the Hub is arts and crafts. Last week, when I was there, I bought a bauble for the Christmas appeal. I also like sewing and knitting, I especially enjoy making squares for blankets. I have made some great friends at the Hub.
